Parent-led publishing
Parents own family accounts. Approved teachers can create private class profiles and approve writing for a class shelf. A child may use the same author profile at home and in class, with separate class and family writing codes. Children don’t need an email address. A parent can optionally save one privately to send their child a writing code; it is not displayed to readers or teachers.
Before you approve
Read your child’s whole story and inspect every image. Use a first name or pen name. Remove surnames, school names and uniforms, addresses, phone numbers, regular schedules, location clues and personal information about other people. Fiction can accidentally reveal real details too.
Use original artwork or images you have permission to share. Avoid identifiable people in covers. The normal cover uploader removes image metadata, but you should still inspect the image itself.
Who can read?
Drafts and review submissions are restricted to the child and the reviewer responsible for that writing space. Class books are visible only to the teacher, enrolled students and their linked parents by default. A teacher can choose to show a public class shelf, but it displays only books already approved for the public catalogue. A teacher-approved class book needs recorded parent consent and NibbleNook owner approval before appearing publicly. Approved books begin link-only: anyone with the link can read and pass it on. A public listing requires parent consent and approval from NibbleNook’s owner. You can return a book to link-only from the parent dashboard.
What is stored?
We store parent email addresses and password hashes, private parent sessions and short-lived email confirmation or reset tokens, plus teacher sign-in identifiers and emails, teacher names, school names, roles and verified work emails, author profiles, optional child code-delivery emails, book and chapter content, covers, review decisions, writing progress and subscriptions. We do not ask for children’s dates of birth, school or address. Passwords are stored with a salted, slow hash. Writing codes, one-time teacher email codes, confirmation links and session tokens are stored as hashes. Parent email confirmation is required before an email-and-password account can publish.
Following an author
Reader names and email addresses are stored privately for author updates. They aren’t displayed publicly or given to children. A child’s parent and approved class teacher can view that author’s follower list, search it, and remove or block an address from following that author. We record when a reader joined, release emails sent and delivery or open events reported by the mail service. Open tracking uses a small image in release emails; some mail apps block or preload it, so a recorded open is an estimate and no open does not prove the email was unread. Past emails have no open history. Only confirmed subscriptions count towards author follower totals. Verification and release emails require an active email service; the signup form tells you when delivery is not yet active. Each release email includes an unsubscribe link.
Book readership
Featured books are ranked by how many browsers have opened their chapters. A random cookie, lasting up to a year, counts each book once per browser; repeat visits and chapter changes don’t add more readers. We store a separate hashed identifier for each book, without a name or email. These are approximate reader counts: different devices or cleared cookies may count again. Counts start from the introduction of this feature.
Badges & visibility
Writing points come from the words in currently approved chapters. Revisions replace their previous word count. The public badge board uses public books only; link-only achievements stay in the family’s writing desk. Parents can hide follower counts.
Account help
Parents can reset their password through an email link and reset family writing codes to end those sessions, change a public book back to its class shelf, and unsubscribe from reader updates. Teachers can reset class-only codes, download a class writing archive, archive or delete a class. For account or data-removal help, contact the parent who manages your account or our team through the channel you used to join.
